Please introduce yourself briefly…
My name is Jan Hradisky, I am working 16 years for Skoda Auto a.s. in a department of Engine development as a head of engine design team. We are located in Mlada Boleslav.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
I would like to talk in FISITA World Congress about technical challenges on design of combustion engines which are caused by new emission regulations, especially how to avoid overheating of catalytic converter by naturally aspirated engines operating in stoichiometric fuel-air mixture (λ=1) with additional exhaust gas cooling.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
I will introduce a principle of additional exhaust gas cooling and how we solved its integration into cylinder head and potentials of this solution which we achieved on real engine.
Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?
First of all is necessary to mention, that trends in field of automotive powertrain system are changing so fast, that they considerably differs from the trends of last year, not to mention the trends of the year 2016 (the idea of presented design is dated back to this year).
What challenges do these trends present?
For powertrains that at least partially rely on ICE is the fulfilment of EU7 emission standards definitely the biggest challenge now. And even within this challenge the aim of development changes rapidly. Whereas the initiative activities were focused on conventional measures and optimizing of after treatment system. Nowadays we can think about ICE only in the context of (P)HEV and even in that case with strong limitations.
The whole energy sector is redistributed now, and the emphasis is on now.
And what opportunities do these trends offer?
The energy transformation seems to be inevitable. It of course left not much opportunities for people which used to work on ICE. Very important thing is the upcoming decreased complexity of car powertrain systems. Development and production of ICE engines used to be a core competence for every car company, which very positively affected the abilities of involved people. The way how to transform the whole ICE-field is up to every single car company, but one is clear, the transformation has to be fast and decisive, otherwise threatens the immense devaluation of manpower in question. So the fast transformation is the biggest and the only opportunity.
