Please introduce yourself briefly…
I am an Associate Professor at Graz University of Technology and frequent guest lecturer at universities and in automotive industry throughout Europe, North America and Asia. In my function as vice-head of the Institute of Automotive Engineering and head of the research area for Automotive Mechatronics, I am responsible for various international R&D projects. My research topics comprise vehicle layout and conception, alternative powertrains, sustainable transportation, mechatronics systems and computational development. I am member of scientific associations, reviewer of journal and conference publications and co-organizer of conferences, and have published more than 100 works and received several national and international awards.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
I will talk about the Combined Approach of Interior Concept Development for Automated Driving Cars.
Automated driving provides large potentials in view of customer comfort, safe transportation and optimized traffic management. New interior concepts are frequently introduced, but they often do not consider sufficiently the different boundary conditions regarding human ergonomics, comfort and vehicle interior safety. With the target to solve this problem, the presentation introduces a combined approach of interior concept development for automated driving cars that enables an integration of the different, partially conflicting boundary conditions, requirements and human factor-related aspects into one comprehensive interior development process model.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
The presentation introduces to the challenges in interior development of future, automated driving cars. In addition, a holistic process model is presented, which combines hardware-based investigation with simulation and virtual reality technologies to enable effective development of novel interior concepts under the consideration of multifarious, partially conflicting boundary conditions and influencing factors.

Electrification of powertrains and digitalization / automation of driving functions.
What challenges do these trends present?
Transition of the automotive industry from mechanics-focus to electrification and software-oriented business.

New technologies, new business models and new ways of more sustainable mobility.
