Please introduce yourself briefly…
I’m Dr.-Ing. José Solaz, Head of Innovation in Automobile and Mass Transport Area in IBV (Instituto de Biomecánica) in Spain.
My role is to dynamize the research activity in the topics related with the future of transport, specially in ergonomics and human factors and how the new types of vehicles and mobility will impact in the users.
We are members of STA (Spain), CCAM Partnersthip, leaders of the H2020 project SUaaVE (autonomous vehicle acceptance) and members of the consortium of the H2020 projects.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
I will talk about the acceptance of autonomous vehicles with high level of automation (L4 and L5) and the challenges of charge of electric vehicles from a human centered perspective.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
A vision of autonomous and electric vehicle from user perspective, human centered instead of technology focused.
Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?
The incorporation of new actors in the mobility sector (sensor developers, startups, small companies intensive in knowledge). This scenario opens the possibility of unexpected innovations and topics of research that are new for the automobile and mass transport actors. This fact impacts both in our domain of research and geographical region.
From vehicle to mobility and the need of integrating the perspective of companies that classically do not communicate among them (i.e. car manufacturers and infrastructure companies).
The impact of AI. How IoT is being integrated in vehicles and infrastructure and how it affects the user in all the possible aspects (data privacy, increase of safety and security).
What challenges do these trends present?
The need for cooperation, creation of a common language and a shared vision of user needs. The incorporation of human centered perspective from the very beginning of the conception of transportation modes.
Working in natural language, understanding how users communicate their feelings, sensations and expectancies to the vehicle and infrastructure is crucial for a real incorporation of IoT in transport. Making systems more sensitive and intelligent is fundamental.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?
The development of mobility solutions from an integral perspective, considering a user centric approach.
The appearance of new branches/uses of AI and computing, according to the high needs of intelligence of the future systems of mobility.
It will permit the appearance of new agents, different from the ones that are already involved in mobility/automobile and transport that might bring solutions from other fields.
