Please introduce yourself briefly…
My name is Maximilian Schaller. I studied Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt with a focus on automotive control applications and obtained my Bachelor of Science in 2019 with a thesis conducted at Porsche Motorsport. I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Robotics, Systems and Control at ETH Zürich. In my research, I am interested in the application of optimal control algorithms to hybrid electric powertrains in racing applications.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
My talk will revolve around the hybrid-electric Formula 1 car. I will discuss the complex energy management algorithms that are necessary to operate the powertrain. In particular, I will focus on how the battery state-of-charge limits influence the optimal control.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
Since the presentation focuses on a motor racing application, participants will learn about the time-optimal control of a hybrid powertrain. This strongly differs from the fuel-optimal control that is more widely studied in literature. I will show how to leverage analytical optimal control theory and numerical optimization to achieve minimum lap times.
Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?
For Europe, the most important trend for my domain of research is the transition to sustainable forms of mobility and the large-scale roll-out of plug-in HEVs and BEVs. This will also have ramifications in motorsport, for instance in the new Formula 1 powertrain regulations that will be introduced in 2025.
What challenges do these trends present?
The powertrains of the future and their interaction with the sources of sustainable energy will be increasingly complex, and they need to be operated in a close-to-optimal way to fully exploit the benefits offered by the new technology.
