Please introduce yourself briefly…
I am Nafees Ahmad, a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Aligarh Muslim University, India. As a student member of SAE-INDIA from 2017-2020, I was involved in the SAE-ZHCET Collegiate Club at Aligarh Muslim University as a powertrain design engineer and participated in Formula Student UK 2018 & SUPRA SAE India 2019. I attended the past two FISITA events, first as a presenting author at FISITA world Congress 2018, and then ESOP 2019 (EuroBrake Student Opportunities Programme). These events act as a catalyst in my career growth and encouraged me to extend my research in the field of automotive design and analysis.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
At the FISITA World Congress 2021, I will be discussing a systematic and stepwise restricted air intake manifold design approach for the Formula SAE cars with the help of Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis and engine simulation.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
The Formula SAE is an abstraction of the Automotive industry with more than 600 formula student teams worldwide. The students face difficulty in designing as there is a dearth of literature that systematically walks them through the designing steps. This research work will help participants (especially Engineering students) in developing an optimized restricted air intake manifold.
Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?
I am considering the Analysis Led Design (ALD) approach in my domain of research for solving real-world problems. There is a trend of an increase in the ALD approach in the Indian automotive industry.
What challenges do these trends present?
There is an inherent lack of trust for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based ALD and the unavailability of reliable validation data makes experimentation still the preferred mode of pre-manufacturing design finalization.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?
ALD provides an opportunity to predict system performance during the concept phase. Higher computational power and better adaptive control allow us to couple the CAE tools (CFD & FEA) and get closer to the actual experimental conditions. This trend also offers more control over input parameters, an increase in the number of models, time-saving & cost-efficient results are helping researchers & students to address the challenges in the automotive industry.
