Congress: A new performance evaluation method for plug-in hybrid vehicles

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Shuai Pei, PhD Student

Company: Waseda University

Presentation Title: F2020-ADM-026 Proposals of Evaluation Method and Control Selection Policy for Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHVs) Based on the Distance Travelled Dependence of Carbon-Reducing Effect

Please introduce yourself briefly…

I am a Ph.D. student studying at the Graduate School of Environment and Energy Engineering (WEEE), Science and Engineering Faculty, Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. I came to Japan after graduating from high school in Liaoning province, China, and received my B.E. degree at Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering Division, and M.E. degree at WEEE, in Waseda University.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

The performance evaluation for PHVs is extremely complicated because PHVs have two kinds of power sources: electric power and fuel. So, I'd like to talk about a new performance evaluation method for PHVs developed by our research team, which can evaluate the blended (BLD) control performance correctly in a comprehensive way. Then as one of the directions to apply this evaluation method, I'd also love to report how to extract an optimal BLD control, which has minimum CO2 emissions at the target distance we pre-set, with the method we developed among tons of BLD controls generated by alternating parameters of the BLD control.

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

We aim to introduce a new method to evaluate the BLD control's performance for PHVs with a comprehensive viewpoint, rather than a single benchmark such as fuel or electric power consumption, so that we can achieve the target of energy-saving and carbon's emission-suppressing. Therefore, the participants can regard our research as a reference when they develop a brand-new PHV control strategy or improve their PHVs' BLD control performances.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region, and what challenges and opportunities do these trends present?

"Carbon Neutrality" has become a very hot topic gradually all over the world in recent years. Indeed, along with the aggravation of global warming, more and heavier disasters occur on the earth. NEVs, as a countermeasure for the issue of global warming, are playing a very important role to realize "Carbon Neutrality". But as the limitations of battery technologies etc (Battery technology is also been developing forward in a high speed these years though.), the anxiety of pure EV's cruising distance still exists, so the PHVs, whose cruising distance can be regarded as infinite, came out. But because PHVs have two sets of powertrains: motor system and engine system, the PHVs are much heavier than no matter EVs or conventional ICVs, and the powertrain is also extremely complicated. How to simplify the powertrain system to lighten PHVs weight and optimize the power control strategies is the key point to improve PHVs' performance, if without considering the increasing of engine efficiency and the development of battery technology and so on. But people say challenges and opportunities always exist meanwhile. If PHVs can get long-step progress, the future is still very bright because the acceptance of PHVs for the market is still high.

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.

Partner with us

The FISITA World Congress is one of the most important and prestigious gatherings of mobility engineers and executives in the automotive and mobility calendar. We can offer a number of exceptional promotion opportunities for organisations, associations and companies enabling them to meet their targeted audience and interact with the key decision-makers in and around FISITA 2021.

There are many opportunities to partner with us at the upcoming Congress.
