Please introduce yourself briefly…
I graduated from the Czech Technical University Prague in 2010 in the field of internal combustion engine. Since that time, I have dedicated my professional career to thermodynamic simulations of combustion engines with the focus on gas exchange processes (advanced valve actuation) and boosting systems. I have spent 8 years as a researcher at the research center of the Czech Technical University in Prague and in 2020 I moved my career further by joining commercial vehicle team in Eaton based in Eaton European Innovation Center near Prague.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
My contribution to the FISITA World Congress 2021 is related to the recent research in the field of advanced engine brake systems for heavy duty vehicles. The paper summarizes the process from the valve lift profile optimization (thermodynamic simulation) up to the engine dynamometer testing. It is an interesting and uncommon topic in the internal combustion engine research.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
The paper itself offers an interesting insight into the engine brake system principle and design. Presented advanced engine brake system utilizing 2-stroke cycle attains braking power that is higher than the positive rated engine power. Such braking performance is enabled solely by advanced valve actuation (very low added mass) and provides high braking power even at low engine speed.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?
The trends in the combustion engine research are quite clear these days: Strict emission limits are pushing the manufacturers to maximize combustion engine efficiency or to partly replace its operation by electric motors with zero local emissions. The heavy duty vehicles go rather the way of combustion engine efficiency improvement, which paves the way for advanced technologies and systems and thus represents both opportunities and challenges.
