Congress: Design Optimization of All-Solid-State Li-ion Battery Electrode by Multi-Scale Simulation

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Makoto Saito, Material Engineer

Company: Toyota Motor Corporation

Presentation Title: F2020-DGT-039 Computational Design Optimization of All-Solid-State Lithium Ion Battery Electrode by Multi-Scale Simulation Based on Finite Element Method Combined with Density Functional Theory

Please introduce yourself briefly…

Makoto Saito is a material engineer of Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan. He develops computer simulation methodologies to accelerate material design and discovery of batteries, emission catalysts, semiconductors, fuel cells, and so on.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

Saito-san shows a new simulation methodology to accelerate the design optimization of the next generation battery, all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSLiB), for electric vehicles. One of the major challenges of ASSLiB developments is the battery performance decay caused by crack formation in the electrodes during charge and discharge. He explains the details of the simulation model and discusses a guideline for durable battery design.

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

Practical application of advanced material technology is essential to realize carbon neutral world. To accelerate the developments, multi-scale simulation is a powerful approach. A valuable example is given in this presentation.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?

Digital transformation of development process is a big trend. To accelerate developments in the true meaning, it is important to understand the strengths of human and digital technology and to divide the roles so that the strengths can be utilized.

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
