Congress: Crash Severity Estimation and Inevitability Modelling in Pre-Crash Safety Systems

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Robert Krause, Research Assistant

Company: Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt

Presentation Title: F2021-PIF-070 Interface and Optimizations for Crash Severity Estimation and Inevitability Modelling in Pre-Crash Safety Systems

Please introduce yourself briefly…

My name is Robert Krause. I received a B.Eng. degree in vehicle engineering last year. After receiving my B.Eng. degree last year, I started to work as a research assistant at the CARISSMA Institute of Safety in Future Mobility (C-ISAFE), Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI). I am also an Applied Research M.Sc. student at THI. My research activities are in the field of pre-crash safety systems, with a focus on the inevitability of collisions, crash modeling, integrated safety systems, and crash severity estimation by using forward-looking sensors.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

I will present an interface and optimizations method for the crash severity estimation and inevitability modeling in pre-crash systems. Incipient with an overview to integrated vehicle pre-crash safety system and the system architecture for forward-looking restraint strategies. Subsequently, I will introduce a methodology for efficient calculation of inevitability and crash severity and discuss the inherent interfaces and possible future optimizations.

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

Participants will gain insight into future safety systems, particularly, but not exclusively, for highly automated vehicles. The focus is on the area of pre-crash algorithms in efficient system architecture.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?

General trends in the field of vehicle technology are driver assistance systems and autonomous driving functions. Future cars will increasingly take over driving tasks and responsibilities from the driver.

Future cars will increasingly take over driving tasks and responsibilities from the driver.

What challenges do these trends present?

Automated driving can not prevent all collisions. It is a challenge to enhance vehicle safety further. For this, novel safety systems will incorporate more information about the vehicle surrounding and interpretation of driving situations. Especially pre-crash systems with forward-looking activation of irreversible restraint actuators can achieve Vision Zero, reducing traffic fatalities to zero.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?

If we develop safety systems to the required level, sensors, data and algorithms will be faster, more efficient, and have fewer misinterpretations than humans. So, it is possible to avoid many of today’s accidents and bring vehicle traffic for the occupants and other road users to another level of safety.

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
