Engineers who are members of an Automotive Engineering Society that is part of FISITA can apply for the FISITA International Engineers’ Certificate to highlight their international outlook and level within the industry. Four levels are offered: Student, Qualified, Engineer and Master. The first two levels are available for people at the beginning of their careers and are self-declared.
The Engineer level recognises people who have graduated from an accredited institution and course and then worked in a relevant role for at least five years. The Master level is awarded to people who are qualified, have been employed for at least ten years, with at least two years in a senior management role.
The Societies manage the requirements for each level and verify that conditions are met for the top levels. Applications made through FISITA are referred to and checked with the Societies.
Global recognition for automotive and mobility systems engineers
The Certificate programme has been established because the industry needs workplace-ready engineers, but it is hard for individual companies to verify engineers' qualifications especially when applications and work experience may be done remotely. Technology and technologists are leading this evolution, with the technology of mobility creating a high demand for ‘non-traditional’ engineering capabilities required to progress the connected, autonomous, smart, clean and safe mobility solutions of today and tomorrow.
Within this increasingly diverse and international technology-based community, the industry is required to accommodate varying country and region-specific approaches to education and qualification, which creates a continually challenging employment environment for engineers and employers alike, including FISITA Corporate Members.
For these reasons FISITA is coordinating an international effort to improving visibility on the supply and demand of engineering capability as a long-term, Society-member-led initiative. This includes the Mobility Engineer 2030 project and now the Engineers’ Guide for Professional Conduct and the FISITA International Engineers’ Certificate initiative, which will provide further support to the international ‘mobility systems’ engineering community, as wherever in the world they may come from, or choose to work, FISITA continues to support its international community of engineers.

The challenge
FISITA is uniquely connected to the international automotive and mobility systems engineering community; through its significant network of members FISITA extends a reach to over 200,000 engineers globally.
In response to the continued challenge of recruiting workplace ready engineers in a global industry, FISITA is coordinating a member-led collaboration in the creation of a standard approach to recognising national qualifications and endorsements.
In doing so the FISITA community is establishing and coordinating an international certificate and register, which will allow FISITA Member Societies to establish their own national register of engineers and provide them the opportunity of global recognition via the FISITA International Engineers Certificate, and individual status within the International FISITA Register.
The initiative has been exceptionally well received by the FISITA membership community, with a growing number already committed to support the programme through the final development stages and become the inaugural signatories to the FISITA International Engineers Certificate at the official operational launch, currently scheduled for Q1 2020.
The objective
During the initial phase of construction and development of the Certificate, Register and Guide, FISITA is delivering the coordination role in collaboration with members that are voluntarily committing to support the initiative.
An integral element of the evolving plan is to use this strong, international group to deliver future development, and to do so engage an independent Committee of external experts which will be asked to advise on raising the standard, over the longer-term.
