Dr. Richard Porter Technology and Innovation Director, Zenzic, will be speaking at FISITA PLUS on Thursday 9 July about “Cyber resilience and Connected Automated Mobility”. We asked him a few questions prior to the event:
Right now we are focussing in on some projects that will enable a much more interoperable and integrated systems for testing and development of connected and automated mobility solutions. For example Simulation and digital twins are key areas we are investigating – if we can enable data and models to be more interoperable between different test facilities while still protecting the IP between them, possibly though the use of APIs, we will be in a great position to enable more collaborative development lowering the cost and time to deliver to market. Cyber resilience is another huge focus for Zenzic, there is likely to be an almost totally emergent ecosystem of vehicles infrastructure and 3rd party apps integrating together to deliver mobility solutions in the future – this is a huge opportunity for new business models but also presents significant risks and unintended consequences if not managed correctly.
Inevitably there has been some disruption to ways of working and causing delays in some project deliveries, but overall the short term impacts on capability development and civil engineering undertaken by our partners to build new connected and automated mobility test facilities has been relatively minor. Indeed, many of our partners like Millbrook Proving Ground and Horiba Mira implemented social distancing measures and have been operating their current facilities without significant operational disruption.
Long term it’s still hard to predict the impact Covid 19 will have on connected and automated mobility. What is clear is that there is definitely a focus on a ‘green’ recovery and there will certainly be some focus on how automation can assist this and reduce the impact of a future crisis. Freight and logistics seems to be one area where there is a real cross industry interest in investing in connected and automated transport solutions. With a more of a focus on integrating warehouse robotics with self-driving vehicles there is potentially a real opportunity to deliver lower carbon and more resilient supply chains.
I’ll be providing an overview of our work to date on cyber resilience for connected and automated mobility. Focussing on the results of the 7 Cyber resilience feasibility studies we recently co-ordinated, I’ll review the problem space, describe the projects findings and discuss some quite forward thinking ideas that should be considered to ensure that we deliver a safe and secure connected and automated mobility solutions in the future – including the idea of deliberately engineering in digital heterogeneity into fleets and infrastructure.
