Congress: Tyre noise detection and perception

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Bharath Anantharamaiah, Research Engineer

Company: Applus IDIADA

Presentation Title: F2020-MCF-027 Advanced numerical methodology for tyre noise prediction

Please introduce yourself briefly…

I am Bharath Anantharamaiah and I gained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College of Engineering (affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University), Bangalore, India in 2011. I then completed a Master’s degree in Computer Aided Conception in Mechanical Engineering (2014) and Algemeiner Maschinenbau or Mechanical Engineering (2017) at the Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen), Germany. I am currently working with Applus Idiada, Santa Oliva, Spain as a research engineer as well as pursuing a PhD at INSA Lyon, France with a specialisation in tyre noise and psychoacoustics.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

Future tyres play a key role in pedestrian safety. Although tyres have been designed to reduce noise, there exists very few works on their detection and perception. However, understanding the variations in the noise behaviour of tyres (for acoustic perceptions) based on the variations in constituent tyre materials is the prime focus of his presentation at FISITA 2021.

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

Participants will gain insight on possible research areas that future tyre manufacturers must focus on in-order compete with others for future market challenges. They will get an idea on the behaviour of their products (tyres) with materials as a perspective. Another take away from my presentation should be the idea on the possibility of modelling and testing tyre noise using finite elements.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?

Pedestrian safety due to the plying of Electric and autonomous vehicles is the most important trend currently. Tyre noise for perception (detection and annoyance) is the most important domain in my research.

What challenges do these trends present?

There are many challenges. For e.g., not all age groups perceive noise in same perspective. For certain age groups annoying noise can be a source of detection or localisation of source and for others, vice versa. This challenge is further amplified if the same study is extended to other continents, ethnicities etc. So several challenges must be considered before manufacturing a tyre for a particular market in future.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?

With proper design and development of tyres, the car manufacturers can collaborate with tyre manufacturers to designing new generation tyres that enhance the pedestrian safety rating of their products. This will reduce the burden of adding additional noise generating devices on to cars to alert pedestrians, which alleviates the sales costs of the products. Moreover, smart tyres ascertain the implementation of electric vehicles on roads and enhances the pedestrian safety in the coming future.

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
