In highly automated driving, control transitions, such as when drivers are asked to take over vehicle control quickly, remain a safety challenge in driver-automation interaction design. Whether drivers are required to monitor the road closely (i.e., at SAE Level 2 or 3), they are likely to become “out-of-the-loop” when vehicle control is automated. In this presentation, I will share our labs’ recent research on novel methods for supporting drivers in potential takeover events via driver feedback.
