EMERGENCY BRAKING TEST ASSISTED BY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE SYSTEMS C. KLEMENT, A. CHIRU, C. NIToIU EMERGENCY BRAKING TEST ASSISTED BY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE SYSTEMS C. KLEMENT, A. CHIRU, C. NITOIU ABSTRACT AUTONOMOUS EMERGENCY BRAKING (AEB) SYSTEMS ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY AVAILABLE ON MODERN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES, EITHER AS STANDARD OR OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT. AEB SYSTEMS USE SENSORS LOCATED AROUND THE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE TO DETECT POTENTIAL COLLISIONS AND WARN OR EVEN INTERVENE ON BEHALF OF THE DRIVER TO PREVENT OR MITIGATE THE COLLISION. THE AEB GROUP HAS CREATED A SERIES OF TEST PROCEDURES BASED ON REAL-WORLD SCENARIOS TO INTRODUCE PERFORMANCE TESTS OF THESE NEW TECHNOLOGIES. TEST PROCEDURES MEASURE AND EVALUATE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE RELEVANT TO REAL-WORLD ACCIDENTS AND DRIVE THE DEVELOPMENT OF AEB SYSTEMS. THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT CONSIDERING THE AEB PROCEDURES. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM WAS EVALUATED BASED ON THE QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESPONSE TO INCREASINGLY DEMANDING SCENARIOS OF TRAFFIC ON PUBLIC ROADS, AND DIFFERENCES IN THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SYSTEMS WERE IDENTIFIED BOTH IN TERMS OF SENSOR TYPE AND THEIR IMPLEMENTATION. AS THE ACTIVE SAFETY SYSTEM FEATURES OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES ARE INTRODUCED TO THE PASSENGER CAR MARKET SEGMENT, THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE NEED TO DEVELOP A STANDARDIZED TEST PROTOCOL AND SCORING MECHANISM TO ALLOW OBJECTIVE COMPARISON OF SAFETY SYSTEM PERFORMANCE SIMILAR ACTIVE IMPLEMENTED ON VARIOUS AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE PLATFORMS. THE OPERATION OF THE CIB SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED AS A "THREE-STATE SETTING FUNCTION". THUS WE PROPOSE A STANDARDIZED SCORING MATRIX TO EVALUATE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE IN EACH STATE. THIS STANDARD ENSURES THAT EACH CIB SYSTEM OPERATES IN ONLY ONE STATE MACHINE STATE AT A TIME. SUBJECTIVE AND QUESTIONABLE TEST SCENARIOS ARE AVOIDED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN THIS STANDARD. THE PROPOSED SCORING SYSTEM IS IMPLEMENTED BASED ON TRACK TEST DATA IN THE EVALUATION OF A 2020 MODEL AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH A CIB SYSTEM. THESE AUTONOMOUS AEB SYSTEMS USE RADAR AND/OR LIDAR SENSORS PAIRED WITH EVEN STEREOSCOPIC OPTICAL CAMERAS, EITHER STAND ALONE OR IN COMBINATION, TO DETERMINE THE RANGE AND MOTION OF POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TARGETS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES AS WELL AS PEDESTRIANS. THUS, IF A POTENTIAL COLLISION IS IDENTIFIED, THESE AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS PROVIDE A WARNING AND BRAKING RESPONSE TO ADJUST THE SPEED IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE COLLISION OR REDUCE ITS SEVERITY.
