In this manuscript, the detailed electrochemical performance of prototype friction materials is investigated by means of voltammetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. The behaviour of the pads in terms of cathodic protection of the cast iron discs and sticking phenomena is elucidated as well. It will be demonstrated that the lower is the corrosion potential of the friction material, the higher is its cathodic protection capability, with an associated reduction of the sticking phenomena between disc and brake pad. Despite the preliminary nature of this work, key elements in the pad composition and their effect on the cast-iron oxidation are identified, thus paving the way for the design of new innovative braking systems.
