Aircraft braking systems are critical in ensuring passenger safety during routine landing, as well as during challenging rejected takeoffs. Brake control systems include several mechanical and hydraulic parts, such as control, shutoff and parking brake valves as well as wheel speed and pedal position sensors. However, the most complex component in modern electronic controllers is the thousands of lines of embedded software code that ensure efficient and reliable brake control able to dynamically adapt to all runway surfaces and weather conditions. This code is mission critical, because the consequences for brake failure can be truly catastrophic, and so must comply with the highest safety requirements of DO-178C standard. In this paper, we will present how model-based software development and model-based system engineering are deployed by the industry leaders and what are the concrete benefits and Return on Investment. The final goal being to develop better, safer software in less time and with fewer resources.
