This paper presents an investigation carried out in order to measure and understand the operating characteristics of an automotive regenerative braking system. This research uses quantitative experimental methods to determine the method of implementation, operating range, and effectiveness of a common production-based regenerative braking system. Obtained results show that in all but the lightest and heaviest braking force application, dissipative and regenerative brakes apply parallel retarding torque. Light braking applications are regenerative-only, and heavy (emergency) braking applications are purely dissipative.
