FEV is an independent and internationally recognized leader in the design and development of powertrain systems. FEV provides internal combustion engine and alternative driveline development together with their vehicle integration. This includes the development and application of hybrid and electric vehicles, transmission systems, E/E components/systems, control hard- and software as well as chassis development. Based on FEV's own deep experience in the industrial and economic operation of test facilities FEV offers a wide range of test and instrumentation systems and related services covering applications from R&D testing through to end-of-line hot tests.
FEV offers the development of Manual (MT) and Automatic Transmissions (AT), Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT), Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCT) and Hybrid Transmissions as well as axles, clutches and complete powertrain testing.
The transmission development chain at FEV consists of CAE, NVH, application and comprehensive transmission testing; this includes in-vehicle and bench testing. Locations for transmission testing are the Engineering Centers in Aachen, Germany and Detroit, USA. The test portfolio covers functional and durability tests of transmissions for front wheel, rear wheel, and all-wheel-drive configurations. Detailed test procedures that have been developed based on FEV's extensive test experience are meticulously followed to ensure comparable results.
FEV's recently built up Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle "FEV LiiONDRIVE" demonstrates that a Plug-In EV can combine its nature advantages with well known properties of state-of-the-art passenger cars. This vehicle is designed for urban driving conditions and is equipped with a 12 kWh Li-Ion battery enabling approximately 80 km pure electric ECE city driving.
Even if the daily mileage is exceeding the battery's capacity eventually, plug-in electric vehicles may not miss the owner's needs: onboard power generation by an integrated Range Extender Module (REM), existing of a small combustion engine and an electric generator, can solve these challenges similar to a serial hybrid configuration.
FEV's new 7H-AMT is an innovative 7-speed hybrid transmission for transverse installation. The transmission with a torque capacity of 320 Nm is based on AMT (automated manual transmission) technology and uses a single electric motor.
The main disadvantage of AMTs compared to dual clutch transmissions or conventional automatic transmissions is the torque interruption during shifts. Therefore, conventional AMT solutions do not fulfill today's comfort requirements and are only found in vehicles of the compact- and sub-compact classes or in sports cars, where shift comfort does not play a key role. The basic idea of the 7H-AMT is to improve AMT technology by using the electric motor to eliminate the torque interruption.
