11 May 2011
FISITA is proud to support the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 along with governments, international agencies, civil society organisations and private companies from more than 100 countries.
From Tanzania to Sri Lanka and from Namibia to Mexico, presidents and prime ministers are expressing their commitment and launching national plans for the Decade. To symbolise the launch on 11 May 2011, national monuments are illuminated with the road safety "tag", the new symbol for the Decade, from New York City, to Rio de Janeiro, Warsaw, Sydney, Moscow, Colombo and Geneva. These events mark the start of the Decade which seeks to save 5 million lives over the ten-year period. The UN Road Safety Collaboration has developed a Global Plan for the Decade, focussing on 5 pillars:
building road safety management capacity
improving the safety of road infrastructure and broader transport networks
further developing the safety of vehicles
enhancing the behaviour of road users
improving post-crash care
Following last November's highly acclaimed FISITA World Automotive Summit on traffic safety, FISITA has applied to become a partner organisation in the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration and to contribute knowledge and expertise in support of the Safer Vehicles pillar on behalf of automotive engineers.
The yellow Road Safety Tag is the official symbol for Decade of Action. Wearers of the Tag are demonstrating their support for the Decade of Action, and their personal commitment to be safe on the road. To order tags and for information about licensing please visit:
