FISITA's Honorary Committee continues to attract new members. The latest company to pledge its support is Toray Industries, Inc.; a global chemical group with 40,000 employees and 230 subsidiaries. Toray's business segments include Fibres & Textiles, Plastic Resins & Chemicals, Films, IT-related Products, Carbon Fibre Composite Materials, Environment & Engineering, and Life Sciences. Honorary Committee representative Sadayuki Sakakibara has been President and COO of the company since 2002 and CEO since 2004. He is also currently a Vice-Chairman of Nippon Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) and a member of the Council of Science and Technology Policy, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan.
Toray's Automotive & Aircraft Center in Nagoya was established to foster the technological development of automotive applications and materials, carbon fibre composite materials and plastic resins and compounds. In December 2008 Toray bought a stake in ACE (Advanced Composite Engineering GmbH) headquartered in Immenstaad, Germany. By embarking on local development and production of CFRP in Europe, where CFRP adoption in the automobile field is far advanced, Toray aims to achieve significant expansion of its automobile-related CFRP business, which is expected to grow markedly in the future.
The company is also recognised as a leader in recycling technologies and is committed to the recycling of fibres, textiles, films, plastic resins, and other materials, working hard to forge material, chemical, thermal and other recycling technologies suited to the specific materials involved.
