About this course

The passion and desire to be a first class designer and the drive to achieve quality in all aspects of your work are core skills for a successful career in design. If you love designing, you will certainly enjoy your study of Product Design and Digital Modelling at JMU.

By providing a stimulating, dynamic, informed and student-centred experience, this programme sets out: to equip successful graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge for a career in product design and related fields relevant to current and future developments within industry; to provide a flexible programme emphasising the importance of design in the 21st century, exploring cultural, technological, historical, environmental and collaborative issues; to nurture and encourage an awareness and experience of the relationship between design theory and practice; to create a mature, reflective, competent practitioner with transferable skills.

Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates should be able to: generate, develop and apply ideas within a design process; apply digital design tools for virtual and physical outcomes; communicate ideas to others who will manufacture and evaluate them; identify and analyse needs and opportunities in response to a design brief; apply appropriate design methodologies; search for and apply sources of information to creative problem-solving exercises; engage in active debate and critically reflect upon design issues; understand and demonstrate how technologies affect design practice and invention; understand the historical and cultural context of design practice; demonstrate an ability to work as part of a project team and to collaborate with others; employ technological concepts, cultural perspectives and aesthetic sensibilities in a holistic way; articulate their ideological stance and personal philosophy with respect to design.

Students are encouraged to undertake field trips to design events throughout the UK and abroad. Such field trips are not compulsory, but are felt to enhance the learning experience for students.
