About this course

The specialism in Automotive Engineering emphasises the importance of the vehicle as an integrated system, whilst also recognising the important role of materials and manufacture in the overall vehicle design. The Department has a wide range of experience in automotive fields relating to internal combustion engine design and system control, vehicle ride and handling, total powertrain control, transmission systems (particularly continuously variable transmissions) and turbomachinery. This breadth is apparent in the teaching, which benefits greatly from well-equipped laboratory facilities that include a full chassis dynamometer. Students from the Department have successfully competed in the Shell Mileage Marathon and in the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Formula Student single seat racing car competition, the latter with major sponsorship from Castrol.

Graduates from this course are equipped with the necessary background to work in the broad spectrum of activities that make up the automotive and vehicle industries. They would normally proceed to become chartered engineers via membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
