"The emphasis in these papers was on the integral safety approach.
The sessions on accident analysis provided the foundation for considering "real world" systems, both established and new, including contributions on the trend in growth markets. Driver Assistance systems are gaining ever more importance and serve together with the subject areas of driver acceptance and information networking the improved interpretation of situations. For the sessions on Advanced Safety Systems, it was decided that the main emphasis would be on the extended networking of vehicle safety by means of new technologies for monitoring the surroundings, and on using communications technologies with the goal of further raising vehicle safety levels. In the presentations, the spotlight was on the new applications for preventing and reducing the severity of accidents that the extended surveillance makes possible. Topics on the protection of occupants and other road users by means of structural and restraint systems was covered in the sessions on Occupant & Pedestrian Protection, in which the emphases are on rollover, pedestrian protection, and side impact. The final-day session on the Human Machine Interface looked at subjects relating to driver behavior, the focus being on awareness and physical fitness.
To achieve the widest possible range of contributions, the choice of presentation topics and presenters represents an even balance from international universities, research establishments, suppliers, and vehicle manufacturers.
The panel session on Tuesday covered the subject "Global trend in road traffic fatalities; the trend in growth markets". In this forum session, the problems of traffic accident fatalities and the measures for reducing their incidence was discussed with representatives from the emerging markets that are experiencing notable increases in the demand for mobility. Participants considered whether the actions and restrictions already established in the traditional markets could be transferred, or whether other challenges dominate in these growth markets."
