Systematic Material Selection for the SuperLight-Car's Body-in-white

In the framework of the SuperLight-Car project, a team of the Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge of RWTH Aachen University (ika) has developed a material selection methodology, which supports an efficient allocation of different materials to individual vehicle body components in the early stage of the development process. The tool is a good resource for the engineer to create first concepts in innovative multi-material design. In the end, the project consortium built up a hardware body-in-white, demonstrating a weight reduction of 37 %, in comparison to a reference body, which was based on the VW Golf V. The original weight saving goal was thus clearly exceeded.
