Rene Waare, Vehicle Dynamics Engineer

My job is...

I am a test engineer working for the Vehicle Dynamics section at Applus+ IDIADA Automotive Technology. I am responsible for the execution of vehicle testing programmes for our clients, from the arrival of the vehicle until the analysis of the test results. And I'm constantly in contact with the client.

Home is...

I come from the Netherlands but I live in Catalonia, pretty close to Barcelona.

The story so far...

My personal history in automotive industry started when I commenced studying Automotive Engineering. After 4 years of studying at the Polytechnics in the Netherlands (Arnhem) I went to England and Germany for a one year Master Course in Automotive Engineering. To complete my studies, I came here to IDIADA's Vehicle Dynamics section, where I have been working for 6 years now, testing and supporting in vehicle development programmes.

Typical Day...

That is hard to say because every day is really different. But as an example, I start to prepare the vehicle to be tested with a technician. That means taking care of vehicle and instrumentation setup. When all is set to be tested we enter the test track and perform the specific test schedule. That can take a couple of hours, but it may also be part of a more extensive programme. After the work on the test track the data is downloaded from the car to be analysed with our internal analysis programs.

Freetime?

Well, without doubt one of my favourite free time activities is being on the beach and enjoying the Spanish sunshine. Furthermore I like to travel and do sports. But I must confess to spend quite some time with cars also in my free time, as some years ago I started to compete in rally racing (have a look at www.geocities.com/renewaare). It serves greatly when it comes to developing better car control skills, which is of course an important issue when it comes to assessment of Vehicle Dynamics.

Burning ambitions?

I am actually very happy with my current activities and must say that I can see myself doing this kind of job for a long time. I hope we can take part in many more interesting development projects, and gain experience in the complex world of Vehicle Dynamics.

The best thing about my job is...

An interesting part of this work is that sometimes we are one of the first to test and fine tune new developments. Tuning of suspension systems is delicate, as there are so many parameters to control but It makes the job a great challenge. Another nice aspect is the great variety of people that we are able to work with.

Worst thing about my job is...

Well, I would really like to take home that car that I was driving on the test track today...
