Major new developments at Applus+ IDIADA

FISITA 2008 exhibitor Applus+ IDIADA has announced the opening of its new wet handling track at its main Technical Centre in Tarragona, Spain. This new facility means the company now has a total of 12 test tracks and consolidates its status as one of the most comprehensive independent technical centres in Europe. Information about the new track can be found at the Applus+ IDIADA booth at FISITA 2008.

IDIADA has also announced it has boosted facilities in its NVH engineering department with the opening of a Hemi-Anechoic chamber, reinforcing the department's product development capacities. The company said the new facility would become an essential part of the study of interior and exterior vehicle noise — with the aim of improving the cabin environment and reducing noise pollution. This first-in-class Hemi-Anechoic chamber is equipped with a roller bench that allows the testing of not only passenger cars, but also light commercial vehicles.

New Tedradis system to be shown by IT-Designers GmbH

Esslingen-based IT-Designers GmbH will be showing the latest version of its Tedradis tool chain product at FISITA 2008.

The Tedradis product offers detailed recording, administration and analysis of measurements. While interactively searching for errors in a vehicle, Tedradis informs the test engineer of the errors it finds as they occur. This allows users to systematically track down intermittent faults. Those results, combined with the input of the test driver or engineer, means faults can be found and fixed more quickly.

Repelling a motoring cyber-attack the Secunet way

Most people are familiar with the concept of computer hacking and 'cyber-crime,' but with vehicle systems becoming ever more advanced and incorporating internet technology, one company is already thinking about how not to become a cyber-victim in your car.

Secunet will carry out a live demonstration on its stand at FISITA 2008 of an attack on a vehicle network, and show how it can be repelled by its embedded vehicle firewall.

Secunet explained its embedded systems are a radical departure from fixed functionality and limited user interfaces, and instead embrace dynamic systems which interact with vehicle networks and third party applications.

Anna Lombardo from Secunet said: "In such an environment, secure separation of the infotainment domain from the rest of the vehicle is crucial to protecting passenger safety systems from internet attacks."

Eberspächer Electronics and TZM bring their midget to the congress

With its new FlexXCon midget, TZM will be showing at FISITA 2008 a universal rapid prototyping ECU which includes a series of different automotive bus interfaces (FlexRay, CAN, LIN, MOST).

This compact electronic module is the second member of the FlexXCon family, whose performance and variability has been increased significantly compared to FlexXCon compact.

The robust design of the module allows its use not only in laboratories but also directly in vehicles.

FlexXCon midget was developed for automotive engineers who need a flexible and universal electronic platform for gateway applications, remaining bus simulation and data logging.

The product provides many detailed solutions which facilitate the work with automotive bus systems. Thus, a universal gateway application is made possible through the use of a total of four communication controllers which can cover all application scenarios.

Emitec unveils a new approach to the reduction of nitrogen oxides in diesel engines at FISITA 2008

Emitec will be showing its PM-METALIT® partial flow particulate filter at FISITA 2008, which it describes as a new approach to the reduction of nitrogen oxide produced by diesel engines. The company says PM-METALIT® eliminates NO2 particles with around half the filter volume and, depending on the amount of NO2 present, increases filtration from 40% to more than 90%. This partial flow particulate filter is highly efficient in reducing ultra-fine particles of soot, and can be retrofitted to passenger cars and HGVs.

Emitec has also developed a way of reducing the nitrogen oxide content in the exhaust gas, which is a combination of PM-METALIT® and an SCR catalyst system. This allows some of the critical issues associated with discontinuous filtering to be avoided. Soot is collected by wall-flow particulate filters until the exhaust gas back-pressure reaches a pre-determined value. Then a subsequent injection of fuel initiates combustion of the soot.

At the same time, there is a considerable increase in the exhaust temperature which may reach over 1,000°C. However, the SCR catalyst achieves its optimum operating temperature within the range of 250°C to 400°C. An added advantage is that less space is needed as the exhaust gas after-treatment system is fitted under the vehicle floor.

New General Manager Appointment at Wind River

FISITA 2008 exhibitor Wind River has announced the appointment of industry veteran Alexander Kocher as General Manager of its Automotive Solutions division.

He will be based in Munich, and oversee the company's global efforts in the automotive segment. He joins Wind River from Siemens Infotainment Solutions, VDO Automotive, where he was Vice President of Navigation Software and Maps.

Mr. Kocher said: "This is a time in automotive history when infotainment features are driving differentiation for car manufacturers. We see that functionality and connectivity are now nearly as important as horsepower and styling. Manufacturers are looking to avoid vendor lock-in, ease their software development and have the ability to customise the in-car experience using industry standards.

"Linux addresses all these requirements and my move to Wind River reflects the industry's embrace of Linux, the technology at the heart of tomorrow's automobiles."
